The AMD 64 you mentioned is probably a 3400+ since the highest speed cpu AMD has is 2.6GHz. I have 2 desktop computers, one with a P4 3.06 Ghz and the other a AMD 64 3000+ (1.8 GHz). Encoding video goes at the same speed for both with the amd64 a bit in the lead. As for normal windows apps both preform just fine. In the gaming world though if you take a look, the top systems have amd64 processors.
One thing though if you choose either the P4 3.4 Ghz or the amd64 3400+ they will both consume substantial power. You can expect about 45-60 min of 100% cpu from a battery, less if you have a high level graphics chip.
1GB memory minimum. for gaming and server software. I haven't use 3dStudioMax but I bet it uses a lot of memory. You may want more than 1GB.
In the end it sounds like this laptop is going to be plug up most of the time so conserving battery power doesn't not sound like an issue to me. I recomend amd64

I bought a laptop 3 months ago: Centrino 1.7 Dothan with 512mb ram and an ATI 9700 mobility
well...I am doing almost all those things u said without any problems. Actually I have a 4200rpm hdd but still the machine runs smoothly. Well...of course not smooth as a desktop P4 or AMD but still considerably fast.
U said u ll play games right..? well I can give u a statistic to compare. I am playing doom3 with all details high with 1024x768. It's hard to believe but yes I am. Well; wheteher if u want to buy a desktop or laptop; I say go for an ATI. It's like Intel and AMD comparison.
ATI crush nvidia in most areas. Instead of 6600 and 6800 series.
